INFRASTRUCTURE: Visa Readies Massive IP Network

"Visa. It's everywhere you want to be." If you're going to have a slogan like that, you had better also have a network to back it up.

Visa USA has built a network so redundant that California's infamous rolling blackouts and a major earthquake in 1989 didn't affect the company's ability to support its users.

VisaNet processes more than 35 billion transactions a year, with more than $800 billion settled annually. The network, which at peak times switches more than 3,500 messages per second, handles consumer, B2B and e-commerce transactions. These include credit cards, debit cards, ATMs, automated clearinghouses and electronic check presentation. VisaNet connects 21,000 member banks, 21 million card acceptance locations and about 570 million cardholders worldwide.

And still the company is upgrading. In the past year and a half, Visa has been making the transition to an IP-based network the company calls Direct Exchange. The network contains Cisco routers, Sun servers, EMC storage, Oracle databases and BEA Systems' Tuxedo as its e-commerce middleware. The "huge extranet" is based on ATM and frame relay. -- Christine Zimmerman
