Whis is right security for oracle datafile. 640 or 777 or others.

I found today in my AIX that some oracle datafile is 777 or some are 660. But when I chmod 644 for those 777 files. The user could not do update and I had to change back. what is wrong

How about sys file. Mine is 666 currently. I think should be 640. Any idea?
