He said to go right to 8.1.6 or 8.1.7. He never did say anything about Oracle8 though. I have a 8.1.5 version here but have no desire to use RMAN. I have no other issues with it though.

Really, so does anyone use it? On what versions is it good work? 8.1.6? Doesn't matter, I did figure out what I was doing wrong, but that certainly is interesting.

I can't tell you why that won't work but I can tell you that I took a course where one of the attendees was an Oracle Support dude and he told me to stay away from Oracle 8.1.5 because RMAN just does not work right. Since I do not use RMAN I did not get details from him.
