ora-03113 on linux?

I've seen this question a couple of times, but never an answer. We're using Redhat 7 and Oracle 8.1.6 . Tryng to create my first database, and svrmgrl keeps giving me the dreaded "ora-03113 end-of-file on communications channel".

Has anyone actually gotten a solution to this yet?
