modify a column from char(5) to varchar2(5) causes ora-02267 erro

Hi,

I am using ALTER TABLE MODIFY to change the type of a column from CHAR(5) to VARCHAR2(5), but gets ORA-02267 error?

Would it be that the column is part of an index the problem?

Any help would be appreciated!
