There are times that Oracle don't close or dismount it, so after a CTRL+C
you can issue an alter system checkpoint and then a shutdown abort if you
think is necessary. Remember that a shutdown immediate in 8 and 8i takes
more time than on 7.
Try always with alter system checkpoint. At least is safer than a shutdown abort alone.
