If you are running version 8 through 8.1.6.x on Solaris 2.6, see BUG
1227119. If you do a search on 1227119 on metal link, one of the =
articles
details the bug quite well. =20

Hi:
We have a dev instance that upon issuing a alter database open ; command
the process just hangs . There is no messages in the alert log; no Trace
files in bdump, udump or cdump. Metalink has been no help!!. We have =
tried
starting this db from a backup controlfile, startup force, recover =
database,
startup restrict everything We try hangs.
We are running in noarchive log mode.
We appear to have enough memory as we are not paging.
I would open Tar with Oracle but development databases are pushed back =
days.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
