I also seem to have missed the discussion...

In fact there is a way to use the imported table as a base for a fast refresh. We are currently testing this with 8i (not sure if all prerequisites are met in 8.0). In short:

Make sure nothing is changing your master table
Export the table
Create a snapshot log on the master table The log will of course be empty
Now you can start updating your original table and the snapshot log will contain changed records as usual
Import the table into the snapshot site
Create the snapshot with the "ON PREBUILT TABLE" clause This will tell oracle, that the base table already contains the data and a fast refresh is possible.

As far as I remember, the description of the prebuilt table clause is not in the Replication Manual but in the Data Warehousing Guide. Look at the "Registration of an Existing Materialized View" chapter.
