Hi Ruth,
Unfortunately no rman here. I wish.
I found a couple of bad db links by suggestion of Scott Shafer. They are
now gone (the passwords were wrong). That could have caused some weirdness
I guess.

Are you using rman for backups. Everytime you allocate a channel in rman is makes entries in the alert_sid.log so....
