Alter system changes the instance (alter system switch logfile) Alter database changes the physical structure of the database (alter database datafile resize...)

That's my take, HTH

Hi All,
For some of you this may be a very basic question .But is there any rationale behind some command being "alter system" and other being "alter database" ,I mean sometime it becomes confusing if you don't remember 'em.

Thanks
-Ajay
