Do you have yyyymmdd set on the server and are accessing it through a client? dd-MON-yy is probably set at the client which overrides the server if the NLS_LANG parameter is set. For windows clients look in the registry in HKLM\Software\Oracle for the string NLS_DATE_FORMAT.
