RE: Q about RMAN and ADSM

 We use RMAN & Tivoli TSM for backups. In our setup, we tried RMAN to copy data directly to tape. But it did not work. We did not spend lots of time as the Tape drive vendor said we have to spend more money to buy some agents and management shot it down!

 So here is how we got it working ... It is working without problems for the last 1 year.
Tivoli TSM backups files (Any files), from DISK shared across multiple SUN Solaris boxes, to the StorageTek Tape. TSM has about 10GB Temp disk storage area, so it keeps files there for sometime and then moves to tape.

RMAN writes data to files on a DISK (20GB capacity) and then TSM moves those files to Tape. So the flow is

Oracle DB -> RMAN Backupsets on Disk -> Tivoli TSM on disk (Temp area) -> Tape drive

 Currently we use ADSM for all our backup needs. I am aware of the ADSM OBSI for SQLBackTrack. Not used it though. IBM/Tivoli does provide what they call a 'Connect Agent' to be used with Oracle's RMAN to work with ADSM. Sort of similar to ADSM OBSI by BMC. You are right, there are ADSM 'commands' to send data to ADSM servers (dsm module commands). What I am trying to find out is when RMAN 'channels' are directed to disk, how does ADSM module come into play. Do we direct the data to a local disk first and then ADSM picks it up from there? Or the ADSM Connect Agent for RMAN adds more functionality to the allocation of 'channels' so that the data is transferred from data files to ADSM.
