The maximum size of a segment is initial extent *
maxextents (except if using partitions) .
With or without maxextent unlimited, you should verify the number of extents periodically, check in dba_segments.
If managing a high availability db then you should use unlimited extent or a big maxextent and monitor the number of extents. You do not want a transaction to fail because the segment has reached its maxextent.
