That would work, but remember you can't install the db without some sort of
an adapter. That works for a stand alone machine, but since this one is
capable of being on the network I assumed it had some sort of an adapter
installed. Maybe the protocol stack is hosed?

Have you thought of installing the MS Loopback Adapter, to simulate being on a network?
That might fool SQL*Net.
I don't know if I understand the problem correctly though.
