Clearing extents can take time. However:
I'm pretty sure that in 1998 (I think) we ran into this exactly, and there was a bug that drop tables takes too long. It was because of a missing index on one of the sys data dictionary tables. The fix was to create the index, and then it worked. Lemme check Metalink quickly...
... Ok, I'm back. I didn't find it on Metalink, but I'm fairly certain I had found it online when it happened in 98 (and I worked for Oracle). If it continues to bother you, call support.
