Rama,

What's your balance of DBAs/SAs knowing Shell vs Perl? PERL skills are (generally) portable across platforms, but Shell is better known (?) at least among us oldies! You also have to keep in mind that DBI/DBD and other goodies are available only in PERL... Go for it!
