How did you get the timing information? Is it from set timing on? This
includes network and client processing times. Try
setting sql_trace on in the session and tkprof'ing the trace file to see
the actual server processing times for the statements. Also, the
comparisons need to be run more than once to ensure they are consistent.

Yes, The results are same .
Without rtrim, the query takes 00:03:12.93 with rtrim the query takes 00:00:00.83
I am not clear as to how addition of rtrim can make
such a big difference. We have also opened a tar with
oracle. and they have been working on this for the
last
4 days.
