We have two IT type groups:
One is enterprise-wide shared services and user support, and the other supports application development, integration & deployment. A good enterprise IT employee does not necessarily make a good systems architect in development, and vice versa.
So, I am aligned with the systems architects (our group is called systems engineering). I maintain some production boxes that we host for clients, but for the most part I maintain the development databases and work on applications: my role owns the database architecture, modelling and transition into production.
I guess I could also be aligned with the software architects, but since most of my critical responsibilities mean that I have to have full permissions on quite a few development and production servers it makes more sense that I be part of the group responsible for their management.
I would describe myself as a development DBA.

Subject: Where is DBA position in your organization?
Hi,
Our ITS department is re-structuring and there is some disagreement over where the DBA role fits into the new structure. Some feel the DBA is more closely aligned with the application development team while others want to see it placed in the server/system administration team. Where does the DBA position fit in your organization's structure?
Ben
