Hi
I received the following problem from a customer:
"
One of my Oracle 8.0.5 databases hangs every few weeks
during the shutdown phase my backup procedures. when this happens naturally
the other databases in the shutdown script are not shutdown because the
execution of the script is suspended. The database which is in this hung
state cannot be shutdown or restarted normally and I'm forced to shutdown
the other databases and reboot my database server.
Note: I'm using the oracle recommended approach to shutting down a database using Oradim80. My server is a dual processor Compact running NT 4.0 server with service pack 3.
I had previously researched the problem and it seemed match the problem caused by Oracle bug:1084273. This refers to a timer overflow which causes background processes to loop defenitely. According to the Oracle metalink site, the likelihood of occurance with governed by the clock ticks of the operating system, with some systems being affected every 24.8 day and others every 248 days.
I had measured the days between the problem occuring for me and had gotten
24 days... so I decided to make sure and reboot my database server at a
convenient time before the 24th day. This seemed to have been working , but
this morning my database hung unexpectedly. This inspite of the fact I had
last re-booted the server on November 14th.
"
I did ask him to check his rollback and temporary segment growth which he
hasn't
responded to just yet.
In the meanwhile, any ideas anyone?
Regards
