ORA-01458: invalid length inside variable character string

I didn't get a response earlier so I'll try again. We've been struggling with this for more than a day to no avail. Oracle support has been totally unhelpful and I tried several things from Metalink but nothing worked.

We got this error message after a migration from 7.3.4 to 8.1.5. We are on Sun Solaris 2.6

Can anyone shed some light on this error?

Is this something I can fix or do the developers need to change their code?

ERROR: 155070 TYPE: E source: download.c line 0294 previous_ret -1458 Could not fetch employee cursor record
