I'll have to admit that since joining this list I have become a much more
well-rounded person, and not just because of all the pig/pork ox/beef
beer/mead I've been consuming.
I mean, geez, Oracle Support has never answered ANY of my questions about linguistics... :>)

Actually, a lot of French words entered English during the Norman (shortened from Norseman) rule. You can still see the division between French/AngloSaxon (Germanic) ruler/ruled in some word pairs. A lot of animal names have German roots while the food they became are French: calf/veal, pig/pork, ox/beef, sheep/mutton. Neet stuff. Received on Thu Nov 16 2000 - 16:47:26 CST
