Ad Hoc basically means unplanned, or in other words "on the spur of the
momment".
By extention an Ad hoc query would mean an unplanned query that might be run
by a user against a database to get a quick response. The query may not be
the ideal query for deployment without further tuning, formating etc.
For example you might want to just get a feel for the type of data stored in a table by selecting just the first 10 rows, but it makes no sense (for almost all scenarios I can think of) to put this query into a production job, application as it cannot be guaranteed to provide consistent results.
