Self solved.

the user account needs sysdba privelages and to be in the password file in order for RMAN to connect to a remote database. I am sure it is written in some manual somewhere ...

Does anyone know of a good book/site/article on RMAN? I am trying to configure it using one server as my RMAN repository and then registering the other various databases on our network - I can connect to these servers through DBA-Studio, toad, and other products, but I can't seem to get RMAN to see them. I think I finally got RMAN to see the new DB server, but now I am getting this error:

ORA-01031 insufficient privelages

I was using system to connect - what am I missing? The RMAN repository is TEMPORARILY on an NT machine running 8.1.6 connecting to a solaris target running the same version.

And it seems like Metalink is not working quite right for me at the moment.

If anyone has any ideas that would be great.

Adam
