Have you tried making use of operating system pipes ? id
/usr/sbin/mknod dumpfile.dmp
cat dumpfile.dmp |compress > final_file.dmp.Z &
exp username/password file=dumpfile.dmp etc etc etc
to load:
zcat final_file.dmp.Z >dumpfile.dmp & imp username/password file=dumpfile.dmp etc etc
