Even as I was hitting the send button I realised that the user in question
had been doing a very large delete statement. Obviously it was in the
process of undoing all changes. The session has now gone.

You have the choice between two UGLY alternatives -
1) Wait
2) Bounce the DB
Oracle will eventually cleanup after itself. A few weeks ago I did the same & it took just over an hour for a session to get cleaned off the system. My guess is that it will take approximately the same amount of time to "undo" a session for the amount of time it had been running before it was killed.
