James and Andrew
First, to test the version of your file, type this command:
file $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
It will return something like this:
/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6/bin/oracle: ELF 32-bit MSB executable SPARC
Version 1, dynamically linked, not stripped
Look for the "32-bit" or "64-bit" part, that will tell you what version.. now
as far as the 8.1.6.2.1 patch goes.. first you need to apply the 8.1.6.2 patch,
then apply the 8.1.6.2.1 patch..
