Tamas,
Here's most of the response on a similar request I sent yesterday...
Doing an Oracle Names server is a fairly easy process. See Ch 6 of Net8 =
Admin book. What I don't like about it is using the Java-based Net8 =
Assistant. To my knowledge, the only java apps I've used have been from =
Oracle (the aforementioned Asst and Universal Installer) and IMHO they are =
slow, huge memory hogs and quite buggy. At least in 8.1.5, there are =
several annoying bugs in Asst so read up on them beforehand. Anyway, aside =
from the interface the names server is pretty simple. One of the bugs =
causes me to delete records from the region database directly rather than =
trying to fight through it using the Asst. However, it did work just fine =
when I tried a simple test case in the Network Admin course I did last =
week using the same version so go figure.
You do not have to use a region database, but our instructor and the class = book made it sound like you COULD lose all the info and have to reenter = it. That doesn't seem very practical since it does write out a "checkpoint = file" when it closes and you can force it to do so as well. So why it = wouldn't just read this file when it started up again??? Anyway, if you = want to go that route, you should investigate further and play around with = it. We use a region database so we don't need to worry about that.
Names server makes management much easier though as much as we have = changed things around the past 8 months!

we are considering using Oracle Names instead of using local tnsname.ora file for every client.=20
We are not using any special things from SQL*Net, no separate domains etc.
Apart from Oracle documentation could someone point me to a practical 'How
to ...' type description on Oracle Names, how to install it, manage it =
etc.
Any hint is highly appreciated.
