Praveen,
This is our backup strategy:
Resync BCV's
Put all tablespaces in hotbackup mode
Split BCV's
Take all tablespaces out of hotbackup mode.
Our redo logs are NOT on the BCV's. The reason is, if you have to restore, you don't want your arclogs restored over any arclogs that may already exist. When you restore a BCV, it overwrites everything.
Our controlfiles are on the BCV's. However, I'm sure you could make this work without having the controlfiles on the BCV'S. Depends on your strategy.
The split command is very fast - like 10 minutes max. Bang, the part of the backup that involves the database is DONE, plus I have a hot backup sitting on the BCV's should I need it (and I have). The BCV's are then written to tape. Restore from the BCV'S takes approx. 25 minutes.
Drawback - the license to use RMAN, BCV's, and third-party backup software like Veritas, Omniback is pricey. So I do not have the flexibility that RMAN gives me, and I am more dependent upon SA's to get me out of a tight spot with a restore. But again: I have a backup that I can restore very quickly.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Oracle Database - EMC Disks and BCV
Hi All,
I am in the process of designing a backup strategy for our Web Portal
Database. The database will
reside on EMC disks. I am familiar with the BCV concept but do not have any
hands-on experience. I
need your help to determine the following.
All comments are appreciated.
TIA
