Hi Marc,

The Parameter OPTIMIZER_MAX_PERMUTATIONS is given in docs. So, u can rely on it.

One thing we have to agree that, by reducing the value from 80000 to any lesser value we r not allowing Oracle to try for all possible PATHs. ( We may lose some good EXECUTION PLAN(s).

So, setting (or modifying ) this parameter at INSTANCE level is not suggestable. Make it for that Session or Query only (using ALTER SESSION ) as specified by Jay.
