On page 20 of SAMS 'Teach Yourself Oracle8i on Windows NT' ISBN
0-672-31578-5 by Meghraj Thakkar it states "The OS block size for Intel NT
is 4Kb". Hhhmmmm. My limited understanding of hard disk geometry is that a
"cluster" is the samllest unit to which a file can be allocated. The size
of each cluster is dependant on the size of the drive, the way it is
formatted, and the operating system your computer is using. For NTFS, which
is AFAIK the recommended file system for NT OS, the following cluster sizes
apply:
NTFS Volume Cluster Size Size (Mb) (Bytes) --------------- ------------- Up to 511 512 512 - 1023 1024 1024 - 2047 2048 2048 and up 4096
So the default Oracle block size of 2Kb is suited to volumes of size 1 -
2Gb. Volume size of > 2Gb which is probably(?) more common have clusters of
4Kb in line with statement made in book above. So why not a default Oracle
block size for NT of 4Kb?
It's a simple matter to adjust default at DB creation time and there's the
old chestnut about OLTP vs DSS type applications but would anyone care to
share any insights/thoughts on this please or are most NT users on this list
using volumes in 1 - 2Gb range?
Sean :)
