Just want to throw in 2 cents.
Such choice must be made based on
- What is this database for? How crucial is it? - How much data are you going to store? - How mary users - etc.
Cost is just one of them.
As far as what I have experiences, Oracle works better on NT than Linux.

They ask whether it is better to put a Linux or an NT on that PC .

What are the pros & cons of each ?
They are mostly concerned about reliability & performance .
