None of that NT talk please, Solaris is a real operating system and deserves to be addressed in a respectful manner. ;)
Seriously, The concept of "start and stop services" is a matter of shutting down or starting up the database by scripts (like dbstart and dbshut which are provided by Oracle) or by connecting to server manager and typing shutdown [immediate, abort].
The other way, which I do not recommend, is by killing the process on the OS level by using the "kill" command in Unix.
