Anything you can tell me. I've never used OPS and plan to attend a class in November.
What version of Oracle did you use?
[Richard Ji] I used 7.3.4 OPS on Digital Unix 4.0d on a Dec cluster.
Does it work as expected?
[Richard Ji] Yes, it worked pretty well for us.
What type of application is it?
[Richard Ji] It's a datawarehouse for a global equity system for a big
financial insitute.
What sort of transaction volumes do you have?
[Richard Ji] Nightly batch load of 500MB data.
How many users?
[Richard Ji] 150
How many instances are you running on how many nodes?
[Richard Ji] Four instance on two nodes. Two instance belongs to a stage
database and two instance for the end user database. Replication between
the two.
How is locking between instances handled?
[Richard Ji] By logically separate the users. One node dedicated for query
the other for updateds.
Have you seen performance degradation because of lock management between
instances or any other inter-instance communication?
[Richard Ji] Nope.
How is logging handled[Richard Ji] Each instance has it's own thread of redo log on distributed raw devices.
Are there separate logs for each instance?
[Richard Ji] Yes
Have you succesfully tested backup and recovery?
[Richard Ji] Yes, using EBU and Legato.
Are there any administration things to watch out for that are introduced by
OPS?
[Richard Ji] Yes, a lots both on the OS side and Oracle side.
How much application work is involved to switch instances in the event of a
failure?
[Richard Ji] Depends on how you have it setup. In our case it's very small.
Is anything lost when a node fails?
[Richard Ji] For committed transactions no, the surviving node will recover
the failed node's redo log.
Have you encountered situations where a node fails but the applications
haven't detected the failure?
[Richard Ji] No I haven't encountered that situation yet.

Has anyone succesfully used OPS in a mission critical production environment? I'd like to hear about it.
