I'm on NT now, but when I was on Solaris from a year to four years ago, we would shut down for our automated cold backups by Shutdown Abort, Startup Restrict, Shutdown Immediate, because Shutdown Immediate alone would often just hang. I don't recall the versions - definitely 8.0, I'm pretty sure this was a problem back in 7 also.
Silly bug.
