Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> Re: How many databases do you support?
At my old job I was one of two DBAs that supported about 30 E-Com
databases, versions 7.3.4 to 8.1.6. Primarily dev and test, some prod.
Small databases (<50 GB). Never a dull moment, and sometimes
adminstration was more reactive than proactive. We supported three
development teams, one test team, and one prod team.
At my new job (very new, into my 2nd week), there are 5 databases (dev, test, prod24x7) all Oracle 8i, plus about 6 prod MSSQL databases. Right now, I'm the only DBA. Am I bored having fewer databases? Nope, just have more time for proactive administration, strategy and planning, tools development, learning new stuff, reading oracle-l.
Besides the number of databases, you might also consider what skill levels are needed vs. what the budget can afford. This will help you choose the mix of junior, mid and senior DBAs. Or maybe even DBOs to handle daily routine tasks like user management, monitoring backups, database status, installing software and patches, end-user support.
