Hi Christine,

I haven't had experience with 734 on NT but I thought the following forum posting by an Oracle representative on Metalink might help.

My reading of it suggests that to install 734 and 816 on NT you need to install 734 first and then 816 (otherwise 734 may muck up 816's registry settings).

For ease of future support I would suggest installing them into separate homes.

Hello,

I am not sure which platform you are on and which version of 8 you have anyway when installing a multiple home compliant version (Oracle8 8.0.4 and higher are multiple home compliant) with a non-multiple home compliant version (like V7), the non-compliant version must be installed first in the default home.

Asssuning you have WIN NT (if not let su know) you can run multiple versions of Oracle on the same NT server. The limitations would apply to versions prior to 8.0.4 when multiple homes were not supported on NT.

For example, you cannot install versions 7.3.3 and 7.3.4 on the same NT server since these versions had to be installed in the same Oracle Home. The executables/binaries include the version number in the name (ORACLE73.EXE).

However, you can install Oracle8 8.0.5 and Oracle7 7.3.4 in the same Oracle Home on the same NT server or in separate Oracle Homes on the same NT server. In this case Oracle7 7.3.4 would have to be installed first (no multiple home support) and then Oracle8 8.0.5 could be installed into a separate Oracle Home.

If you want to install Oracle8 8.0.4 and Oracle8 8.0.5 on the same NT server, you can accomplish this by using separate Oracle Homes. Because these are the same major version (8.0) they cannot be installed in the same Oracle Home.

I think the documentation you are looking for can be found in your NT Getting Started Guide for 8.0.5. Chapter 6 discusses multiple home use and does talk about these installation scenarios.

Thanks!
Kalpana

On NT....thanks Jared. One more question though...since I am going on a new adventure doing this, anyone have any suggestions\tips as I try to install? Also, what about having both DB's (734 and 816) up at the same time??? Any quirks that I should know about???

Thanks,

Well, you don't meention what platform it is.

If on NT, I believe it can be done, but I've been told you must install 8.1.6 first.

On Unix and variants, no problem. We have 8.1.5, 7.3.3.5, 7.3.4, 8.1.6 and probably a couple I missed.

But since you asked, I'm guessing you're on NT.
