Thanks for the tips and help... the database is OK now--I think most of the problems were related to a power outage on our Unix box that happened in the middle of a Unix file system backup that took down the database.
Next time, the sys admin types will notify me so I can kill any backups running and bring the database down myself. Thanks again, everyone that responded.
