Rachel,
I've got about 50 HP-UX servers running Oracle
at the moment. I've noticed no significant
performance degradation by turning on
timed_statistics.
What versions of OS/Oracle did you see these problems on?

there is very slight degradation of performance on all platforms if you
set
timed_statistics = true but not enough to make it detrimental to keep
it
on.
Only HP-UX has the significant degradation, that I know of.
