I vote for locks. You can perhaps check periodically for locks, to find the culprit. Then other sessions could be killed, or your export Oracle session could be killed.

What OS? What version of Oracle? Is your export file hitting a 2GB os file limit? Are any mount points full?

If on unix, you can kill the OS process.
