RE: OpenWorld vs IOUG-A Live

A lot has changed since I started to go in 1989 in Dallas. At that conference there was no time between session. People literally knocked each other down to go from Room 1 to Rooom 9. However, the Campgrounds were fully staffed by domain experts, they were fun (in a geeky kind of way) and open 24 hours. An Oracle employee was showing us the optimizer logic paths for v6 around 2am when suddenly we all figured out how late it was. But oh well...

OpenWorld is great if you have the time to carefully research your talks and go to those that truly will benefit you. The size can be overwelming for new people. I like it and I feel I get a lot out of it. But there is still fluff.

"Live" is smaller and more technical but not perfect. Poor papers exist there too sometimes. However, there is more control over content, and there are far fewer marketing papers there.

One thing that is very sad is the end of paper proceedings. It was a true tome for those interested in reading pure tech stuff. Browsing a CD is not the same. And having to log into a web page and browse online is, well, not everyone's favorite pass time.

If you can, go to both. If not, alternate.
