Hello Siva,

Instance locks exist in the DLM of an OPS database. Many of them correspond directly with enqueues as in this case. There is a whole chapter devoted to this in my book.

Hi Rajiv,
The thread instance lock (which corresponds to the RT enqueue) is used to detect instance death, whereas the checkpoint heartbeat that we have been talking about here is used to detect a "split brain" - that is, two instances having the database open but one or more of them being ignorant of the existence of the other.
I hope that's what you were asking ...
