The steps are all documented in the migration manual. I recently migrated a very small 8.1.5 database to 8.1.6. At first I tried using the GUI based Migration Assistant, but that bombed out every time I tried to connect to the database. Finally I used the manual method, which involved running a couple of upgrade scripts. I don't recall the exact names right now.
