They were doing it in the past too, colonization of other countries comes to mind.

Empires, raiding your neighbours for food, land (to grow food), etc.

Now your wallet is the target - selling you stuff you don't need by pushing people's social status buttons (e.g. a SUV), or by keeping salaries low and laying people off so shareholders can get higher returns.

        There is way too much of the concept "let people do what they want, when
