Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Tell me about the confused OCP.
Iam under the impression that I need to upgrade my certification before the
older version expires. Actually, I saw the expiration date(August 2000) for
Oracle7exam, and I upgraded to Oracle8 in Jan this year. When contacted,
they told me that I need too upgrade to Oracle8 before Aug 2000. If failed
to upgrade before Aug 2000, my certification would be invalid and I need to
take all the Oracle 8 exams(6, I believe) to get into the certification path
again. Also, they said, I need to take Oracle8 upgrade exam and then only
eligible to take oracle8i upgrade exam and I can't bypass oracle8 upgrade
exam and take oracle8i upgrade exam. directly from oracle7 cert.
My question is, after a few years oracle stops offering oracle8 upgrade exam( just like Oracle7 exam), then how can I appear for Oracle8i upgrade exam if I have only Oracle7 cert and not Oracle8 cert? Since it is not possible to bypass oracle8 upgrade exam inorder to get oracle8i cert., it will be of no use to hold oracle7 cert. which automatically force you to take all the oracle8i or 9i exams at some point in time. Let me know if what I think is wrong.

Janardhan,
I was also in the same impression two months back.
I sent mail to Oracle (i don't remeber the exact address now) requesting
clarification reg this.
They clearly replied stating what I had mentioned in my earlier reply.
I have that reply also with me in my hotmail account which I cannot access
now.I had forwarded that mail to some of my friends.
I will try to get it and post it over here.

Xiaoliang Chen,
Once you are certfied in any particular stream( 7/8/8i), your certification
is valid forever. And whenever you want to take up the upgradation exam just
take it.
Best thing for you is to go for 8 stream and later you can think of
taking
up 8i upgradation. My observation is that it is much difficult to clear 8i
exam directly because of so many new features.

hi, all,
I decide to pass my OCP DBA in two months. But I do not if I
directly choose
Oracle8i test package or choose Oracle8 test package and then have a
Oracle8i new features test.
One of my friend said this to me:
Let me tell you why it is not good to do oracle 8i at the moment.
1. It will cost you a lot since no one has the stuff for oracle 8i and is
selling it on the net.
2. the market will not revert to oracle 8i before a couple of years,
because mosst companies recently migrated from oracle 7.3 to oracle 8
3. if you do oracle 8 and give the upgrade exam you will have two
certification. oracle 8 dba and 8i dba.
I am afraid I could hardly get Exam crams about Oracle8i at
this
time. Maybe
I should first pass the Oracle8 and then pass the upgrate test.
But someone tell me one must pass the upgrate test in 6 months from the day
the new version was coming up. Which mean if Oracle8i was coming up on
01/01/00, I have to pass the upgrate test from Oracle8 to Oracle8i before
07/01/00. That mean I could not the upgrate test.....I am so
confused....help me!
What is your all 's suggestion? Please give me a reply. Your reply will be
fully appreciated.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely, Xiaoliang Chen
