Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I did have tnsnames.ora files in the database
directory and the Oracle Enterprise Manager directory. I renamed all of them
except the one in the pfile directory.
I received a "special" dll file from a contact at Microsoft and I placed it
into the common dll directory in Windows 2000. But Windows 2000 prevents a user
from changing the operating system. As soon as I put the dll into the system,
Windows 2000 changed it back to the old version.
I'm supposed to talk to the contact tomorrow.

Do you have multiple tnsnames.ora's on your system?
It sounds like the one that MS is using doesn't have
the alias you're using, or the file doesn't exist at
all, whereas the one that gets used by SQL*Plus does.
You might also check the sqlnet.ora's to make sure the
default.domain's are the same.
