Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> Re: I/O activity during HOT backups
Oracle has designed it's database to allow backups during activities =
against the tablespaces. When you issue the command"...BEGIN BACKUP" the =
updates against the tablespace are "held" in the redo logs until the time =
you issue the "...END BACKUP" command. That is the reason you should =
switch log files when you have backup up all of your tablespaces and copy =
the archive logs to the backup destination or device.
Hope this helps.

Please settle a discussion amongst our DBA team:
Is there ANY I/O that takes place to the database files (*.DBF) during a HOT backup? (That is, ALTER TABLESPACE BEGIN BACKUP).
If not, how does the process work?
Thanks.
