Lisa,
The log_archive_dest parameter is not modifyable without bouncing the instance. You will lose your connection to rman when you do this. What about doing an archivelog backup and use the delete option. This will but the files in your backup destination and get them out of your archive log destination. We do an archive log backup with each full and incremental backup we do. Then we put the whole mess on tape. It is one more step to restore the archive logs when you do a restore/recovery but it sure helps because we never fill up our archivelog destination.
