Here are the steps if anyone faces the same problem:
Ensure that root does not have a default shell that is on a mounted filesystem.

Boot from the instalation CD. This will generate a ramdisk. Log as root (with no passwd). Then mount the / of the FS you will recover. I dont remember if sun boxes has any 'maintaining mode' (like AIX).
