Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Setting the archive destination
There is way a to backup(through RMAN) archlogs from a different destination
when you have your archlogs dir full. First move some of the archlogs to a
different place where you have room and then run the following command
sequence from RMAN>

Thanks for your response.
Unfortunately I am not convinced it's that simple.
They finally gave me the extra space I was asking for yesterday when
everything
ground to a halt - there were ~150 arc files to be backed up. At peak
processing they generate one 100M arc file every 1-2 minutes. I see no way
around this. So they generate ~5GB an hour, and a tape backup job to write
this
much data can take three hours. I have tried bumping up the frequency of
the
rman jobs, but they seem to step on each other and screw each other up
(NetBackup is our lovely backup software). Add to it one of the tape drives
may
be on the fritz and it's very difficult to tell which one it is, per our SA.
So
jobs die just for the heck of it.
I had jobs running every 15 min during peak processing - Didn't help. I had
12
jobs sitting out there at one time fighting for resources. The best
frequency
I've found is once an hour. And with the space I now have, I think I'm in
good
shape at least until I leave at the end of the month, and I can now sleep at
night and do things other than babysit backups during the day.
A big dirty martini helped me get over this fiasco.
Thanks

I think the solution may be elsewhere.
If your arch directory fills so quickly that RMAN does not have time to back
it up, it may be time to enlarge this filesystem, or compress archived
redologs if not already done.
If RMAN does not run often enough (eg, you run RMAN once a day, but
sometimes extra activity generates more redo and your archive dir fills up),
then you can run regularly (via cron) a shell script than monitors the free
space in this dir and launches an extra RMAN session (wich will only backup
the archives ) if needed.
