We were having big SQL*Net problems with Linux as a client. We have several
seasoned Sun SA's who came from Sun, E-Bay, and other dot.coms and going to
Linux was a "step down" for them. The Linux part of our architecture was
"inflicted" on them before they got here. We do a lot of load balancing for
chat and directory services and the thinking was we could scale cheaply with
Linux. But the true cost is more than just the purchase price!. It was
becoming a support issue. We were getting lot's networking errors even apart
from SQL*Net. The symptoms began with the infamous ORA-3113 non-informative
error message. Ultimately, we worked on one box until we finally got it
stabilized then developed a cloning mechanism to keep all the Linux boxes in
sync. And we have to rigorously make sure all the machines have the same
hardware peripherals and drivers. There is still a lot of Oracle
functionality that's not mature or even working on Linux.
You may have to become a systems integrator to push Linux to its capabilities. Unlike a "captive" environment with Sun, there is no turnkey package deal. No one company owns the O/S and the hardware and is responsible for making sure all the drivers work and software. Not only that, there are multiple peripheral vendors and you have to thoroughly test everything. If you want to avoid this you may want to consider going with someone like VALinux. I believe Linux will be a major force and a great Oracle platform but it's not mature like other platforms yet.
Just a few thoughts,

I used to run 8.1.5 on RH 6.1
Here are the bad experience I remembered: 1. Had to get Blackdown JDK before I can even start installing. But RH came up with an special edition so JDK is bundled. 2. No INSO Filter available on Linux as of 8.1.5, so I couldn't use that feature which is available on Solaris.

I have two instances of Oracle 8.1.6 running on RedHat 6.1.
